‘Healthy’ Butter Toffee Apples: A Fun, Fruit‑Forward Seasonal Treat

‘Healthy’ Butter Toffee Apples: A Fun, Fruit‑Forward Seasonal Treat

Perfect for autumn adventures, these homemade Butter Toffee Apples are rich in Vitamin C, pectin and fibre - and with sugar and dairy alternatives, they’re a great way to balance out the inevitable Halloween sugar highs.

A lovely treat for little adventurers

These Butter Toffee Apples keep the crisp, juicy apple at the heart of the treat, with just enough toffee and chocolate to make it feel exciting. They’re brilliant for doing with children:

  • Small apples are perfect for little hands to hold, dip and decorate
  • A light homemade coating gives you all the sticky, giggly fun without overwhelming the fruit.
  • Kids can help wash the apples, choose toppings and set up the dipping station - this part feels like a mini autumn workshop.

You’ll need

  • 6–8 small apples
  •   6–8 thick wooden lolly sticks
  • 125 ml golden syrup or agave syrup
  •  2 tbsp coconut oil or butter
  • ½ cup golden granulated sugar or coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk (dairy, oat, almond or rice milk)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 bar of chocolate for dipping (we love Green & Black’s Butterscotch)

Method

  1. Push a wooden lolly stick firmly into each apple through the stalk end.
  2. Line a dish or tray with baking paper, arrange the apples on it and freeze for 20 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, gently melt the coconut oil or butter in a small saucepan.
  4. Add the syrup, sugar, milk, vanilla extract and salt. Increase the heat until the mixture begins to simmer gently.
  5. Cook for 10 minutes, whisking whenever the mixture bubbles.
  6. While the toffee cooks, melt the chocolate gently in a bain‑marie ready for dipping.
  7. Test the toffee: dip in a cool spoon - if it sticks, you’re ready.
  8. Remove the saucepan from the heat and take the apples out of the freezer.
  9. Set up your production line:

·        Dip each apple into the toffee and roll it around so it’s lightly coated.

·        Dip the top into the melted chocolate.

·        Place chocolate‑side down onto the lined tray.

·        Repeat (kids LOVE this part).

     10. Chill the apples in the fridge until the toffee has set. Waiting is the hardest part - especially when little                        hands are nearby.

     11. Once cool and firm, serve and enjoy.

A little Brambly Trails tip

For a lighter finish, choose small apples, let any extra toffee drip back into the pan and add a simple chocolate drizzle rather than a full dip.

Little helpers can wash and dry the apples, choose toppings or help line up the dipping station, while a grown‑up takes care of the hot mixture. Once set, they’re perfect after an autumn walk or around the bonfire.
